Elijah Silvera (DOD: 11/03/2017)

Elijah was at school when he had an accidental ingestion of milk, in the form of a grilled cheese sandwich.   He had taken one bite before staff was able to remove the contents in his mouth.  He likely did not swallow this bite.   After, when he developed wheezing, he was treated for an asthma attack.  When he did not improve, he was taken to the ER.

He had a known allergy to milk in addition to seafood, eggs, and peanuts.  He had asthma and a strong family history of allergy including food allergies.  His asthma was well controlled, on an inhaled corticosteroid 2 x per day and albuterol as needed.   He had a meal plan at his Pre-K and the family was very careful about reading labels to check for his allergens before any consumption.  Epinephrine and albuterol were both housed in the school for Elijah.

He had a prior reaction to milk that included vomiting and difficulty breathing.  He had needed epinephrine with this reaction and was monitored in the hospital.

Elijah was a lively boy.  He went straight to walking without crawling first.  He did not need or want assistance to be fed.  He was joyful and inquisitive.   His father described him as having it ‘his way or no way’.  He was also very imaginative and could create complex systems with blocks even at 3 years old.  He is dearly missed by his family.

His father, Thomas Silvera, has created a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 called Elijah-Alavi Foundation Inc. For more information:
