The Registry

The International Consensus on Anaphylaxis described this condition as 'a serious, generalized or systemic, allergic or hypersensitivity reaction that can be life-threatening or fatal' in 2014.  In the United States, anaphylaxis due to food was not well described until 1988 when Yunginger et al. published an account of 7 fatal reactions due to food in the Journal of the American Medical Association.  Next came Sampson’s et al. paper describing 6 children who perished from this cause in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1992 followed by Bock et al., in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, reporting on 32 fatalities in 2001. 

Frankly, for medicine, this is a fairly new concept.  Many questions still exist around this serious health issue.  The exact number, per year, of fatal food reactions in the U.S. is not fully known.  Epidemiological data on mortality from food allergy is sparse. 

This project is meant to be a long term archive of those who perish from a food allergy in the United States.   We are honored to share the stories of those who have lost their lives to this condition.   Our hope is to learn from them.  The Registry aims to document the particulars around each death.  Through this documentation, we hope to provide a sense of understanding with the ultimate goal of prevention.   

We maintain a Map that vividly illustrates where individuals have lost their lives throughout the United States due to food allergies. An Index fosters better understanding about the individuals who have lost their lives to this unique condition and the circumstances surrounding that loss.

The information below is kept anonymous until consent has been provided by the family of the deceased. As consent is acquired, and stories are gathered, profile pages are developed to share the story of the individual who was lost due to their food allergy.
